On Thursday, Ben Gummer, MP for Ipswich and Cabinet Minister, spoke to Sixth Formers about the need for young people to engage in politics.
Mr Gummer’s candid and highly personal address cast a light on the responsibility we all have for our democracy as well as the potential rewards of serving others. He was an inspiring and reassuring voice in times of growing political uncertainty and disaffection, showing how – with the right will – the political system can work to effect positive change both at a local level in his Ipswich constituency and on a national and international level in the Cabinet and in Parliament.
We all went away from the event feeling energised, with a new perspective on the functioning of our democracy, and with a keener interest and optimism for the events of the year ahead.
