‘Favourite independent school,’ Framlingham College was recently picked up by journalist, Melissa York, writing for national publication, The Times. She wrote an article which highlighted the recent swathe of Londoners relocating to the stunning Suffolk countryside in the wake of the pandemic and chose to focus on the area around Framlingham and Suffolk Coastal as prime spots for a ‘post-Covid generation of home buyers’.
The article looked at the way in which Suffolk has been put on the map by becoming the tranquil setting for a number of recently released films and TV shows. These include Netflix’s The Dig, which stars Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes and is set in nearby Sutton Hoo, as well as McKenzie Crook’s slow-paced sitcom, The Detectorists, released in 2014, which was filmed in Framlingham.
While Ms York’s article highlighted the many naturally beautiful features of Suffolk and the surrounding areas, it also drew attention to the startlingly reasonable house prices of the area, compared with other areas of outstanding natural beauty, such as the Cotswolds or the Lake district. One Suffolk local, Tommy Newbigging, said: “Suffolk was a secret that my parents were lucky enough to discover 30 years ago. They made a conscious choice for us to have a childhood in the country. Good value can be found on the outskirts of quiet seaside villages such as Sudbourne and Dunwich.”
For pupils and teachers, the fact that Suffolk and Framlingham College, set in acres of manicured lawns and with views over the castle, is finally being recognised for its stunning natural features will come as no surprise.
