Pupils at the Senior School celebrated International Mother Language Day 2024 with an incredible immersive multi-language cultural fair
Officially launched by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999, International Mother Language Day has grown in popularity with events and celebrations taking place all over the world.
With the 2024 theme as “Multilingual Education – a pillar of learning and intergenerational learning”, the event aims to promote the awareness, preservation and protection of all languages used by all peoples of the world through education, arts, sciences, and culture.
With our rich and diverse school community of pupils and staff, our cultural fair included stalls representing mother languages from countries including Ukraine, Brazil, South Africa, Nigeria, France, Spain, and Portugal.
From delicious treats, national dress, notable celebrities, and wonderful creations – the stalls showcased the best of each country, with interactive elements for pupils to discover more or test their knowledge on the country and its history.
Talking about the importance of events like this in school, our Head of Global Awareness Prefect, Prissha K, said: “Events like this are so important in schools – they not only help pupils feel like they belong, no matter where they’re from, but also allow pupils to learn about each other’s cultures and grow their understanding and respect for different ways of life.
“It’s also a great way to raise awareness and celebrate the cultures of the countries our current pupils are from. Celebrating different cultures helps to break down stereotypes and makes the school feel more united – it ensures that everyone feels welcome, valued and that their national voices have been heard.
“This year, we celebrated International Mother Languages Day by showcasing some of the different cultures in Framlingham College with traditional snacks, street food, cultural wear and even historical artifacts.
“The reaction from the school community has been brilliant and we look forward to adding International Mother Languages Day as an annual school event.”
