Our U11 boys recently competed in the regional cricket finals at Chigwell School in Essex.
The first game was memorable for some marvellous batting from all eight boys, (103 off 12 overs) and then limiting Cambridgeshire champions King’s Ely to just 46.
Unfortunately our display in the second match against St. Aubyn’s from Essex was marked by a number of rash shots, nine wickets falling in total. Ben Smart and Noah Bowden’s 43 off the last three overs gave us a slight chance but we weren’t able to quite take enough wickets to force a victory.
King’s Ely’s win against St. Aubyn’s meant there was a run count back to decide the group winners. Agonisingly we came second by just two runs – such are the small margins in sport.
In the bronze medal play off, shortened to eight overs a side due to time constraints, Brandeston posted a reasonable total of 49. It came down to the last over again. Daniel Bryanton bowled a marvellous out swinging delivery to get a caught behind off the first ball, but Widford Lodge managed to hold on to win by four runs.
Fourth place in the region was an excellent effort by the boys did well to very qualify following wins against St Felix, Ipswich Prep and The Abbey and capped a very good season.
The boys have played their cricket in an excellent spirit all summer and were a huge credit to the school and the county!
