By: Helen Russell – Head of Mathematics, Framlingham College Prep School
Twenty-six Framlingham College Prep School mathematicians from Years 7 & 8 reached the Gold, Silver or Bronze standard of excellence in the UKMT 2018 Junior Mathematics Challenge this year.
The competition, run by the Leeds University based UK Mathematics Trust, is aimed at individuals who have a particular talent for Maths and over a quarter of a million 11-13 year olds across the British Isles took part. To challenge our many More Able pupils 40 enthusiastic Set 1 and Set 2 pupils were entered for the tough but fun challenge. We were thrilled to hear that our certificate haul was nearly doubled this year: well done all!
William Singleton (Year 8) and Ben King (Year 7) also received ‘Best in Year’ certificates with the additional accolade of ‘Best in School’ for William and the honour of being invited to the next round of the competition called ‘The Kangaroo’ – only the top 2% of those that take part manage the ‘jump’ up to this level. Mrs Russell, Head of Mathematics, was delighted with the passion for problem solving shown by all our Junior Challenge Award winners and Will was presented with a cuddly kangaroo in Assembly this week – a true inspiration to younger number crunchers in the school.
