The Lower and Upper Sixth English Societies have met again for the third time this academic year.
After Dr. Hoole’s eloquent exploration of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ last half term, the Lower Sixth moved on to looking at 17th century poetry. A short lecture by Mr Goldsmith on the Cavalier and Metaphysical schools led to the Lower Sixth being split into two groups to analyse five different poems from the period, before presenting to Mr Goldsmith, Mr Ashton and Dr Baird.
The Upper Sixth meanwhile, met for their latest working lunch; this time the subject was 20th and 21st century dystopias and a discussion led by Mr Goldsmith was followed by students working in pairs to create their own convincing synopsis of a dystopic novel: the winners of the ‘best concept’ prize will be announced in the final meeting for the Upper Sixth after half term.
