Some of our College Music Scholars’ were amazed and inspired on Monday, when they went to hear Steven Isserlis, the internationally renowned cellist, at Snape Maltings.
Steven is famed for his dramatic playing, diverse repertoire, and distinctive sound through playing on gut strings, and he certainly lived up to expectations. Particular highlights were the energetic and utterly beautiful Lieux retrouvés by Thomas Adès, and Waldesruhe by Dvorák. This was a challenging evening in places, which aimed to stretch our young musicians’ understanding of both stylistic interpretation, and performance practice. It lived up to expectations, and we were all buzzing about what we had heard at the end of the evening!
