Our pupil led Sustainability Committee hosted a charity pop-up thrift shop at the Senior School, selling pre-loved clothes in aid of Motor Neurone Disease and to raise awareness of the impact that unwanted clothes have on the planet.
Pioneered by Year 13 pupil and Sustainability Prefect, Lily F, the inspiration behind the thrift shop was to help raise awareness about how the school community can reduce waste and embrace sustainability in a fun and fashionable way.
“As many know, the fashion industry is responsible for generating massive amounts of waste, from clothes ending up in landfill sites, to the amount of energy and water used in the manufacturing process”, says Lily. “I wanted to showcase how thrift sales and charity shops can expand the life of pre-loved clothes, keeping them in circulation for longer and out of landfill sites.
“There has been an amazing response from the school community, with incredible donations from pupils, teachers and parents. Promoting sustainability through events where the whole school can be involved is a great way to bring people together, increase awareness and strengthen community spirit within the College.”
The money raised from the thrift shop will go towards this year’s chosen charity, Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
“Each term, a charity is selected by the Charity Committee, with pupils able to put suggestions forward”, Lily explains. “MNDA was suggested by a pupil whose family member was recently affected by the disease. All the money raised from the thrift shop, alongside any future charity events we do this term, will go to MNDA.”
