Framlingham College Tennis recently held its annual U14 Singles Championships that also counted as its ‘Road to Wimbledon’ U14 Qualifier. Ten boys and eight girls played a forwards and backwards knock-out draw with each match the best of 3 short sets.
In the girls event, excellent straight set victories for Georgie Gardens over Ellie Bone and Mimi Salsby saw her progress to the final. Here she came up against the much improved Isabella Prince who had won her first two matches with the loss of just 2 games. The final had some well fought exchanges but Isabella’s strength advantage and ability to finish off points with mid-court winners saw her deservedly run out a 4-0 4-1 winner.
The boys event saw the match of the day when Noah Bowden just edged out Rufus Maile in a marathon 3-set encounter. The semi-finals were both well contested with Ben Sunderland overcoming Theo Salby, and Lucas Walker defeating the brave Ben Smart, who thoroughly deserved his two games.
The final saw Lucas gain full control of the match with a 4-0 first set win; however, Ben dug deep and went 2-1 up in the second set before Lucas closed out the next 3 games to retain his title 4-0 4-2.
Isabella and Lucas will now contest the County Finals at Felixstowe Tennis Club on July 3rd with the winners progressing to play at the All England Club for the National Finals in August.
