On Friday 10th November a team of four young scientists – Rupert Harpur and George Pearl (Year 9), Niall Pearson-Shaul (Year 10) and Rufus Easey (Year 11) – took part in the “Top of the Bench” competition hosted by Briar Chemicals in Norwich.
The event, organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry, required the students to work together to carry out some forensic science experiments. Their results would help police to solve a crime. The boys all got stuck in from the outset, tackling the experiments with enthusiasm and skill. They worked hard throughout the long morning and had the satisfaction of winning the Chemistry quiz at the end of the day, although the overall winners’ trophy went to another school.
Dr Higgins said “This event was a great opportunity for the students to think on their feet and apply their knowledge and skills in unfamiliar situations, as well as giving them a glimpse of what life is like in an industrial scientific environment. I was very proud of the way they performed.”
