An enjoyable day was spent at the Royal Academy of Arts and National Portrait Gallery.

At the former, students focused on the work of the American, Jasper Johns, known for his iconic imagery of flags, targets, numbers and maps in a diversity of materials, colourful and in large scale. In the morning, pupils sketched and recorded ideas in preparation for immediate follow-up work in College with wax, collage and paint.

After lunch, the group viewed an exhibition at the Gallery of the work of Paul Cezanne, one of the most influential artists of the nineteenth century. The show explores the thematic characteristics of Cezanne’s portraiture, with over 50 exhibits. Here, quality observational studies from the pieces were made in pencil, in support of recent project work.
